Three towns were issued with an urgent warning to keep their doors and windows closed following a chemical leak.
South Wales Police issued a statement saying there had been a “checmical leak” at Dow Corning in Barry at around 4pm on Saturday. The warning was issued for people in “Dinas Powys, Sully and Penarth areas” who were”advised to close doors and windows as a precaution” while the matter is being dealt with.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service published an update at just before 5pm that said the incident had been given the “all clear”. Residents have been thanked for their cooperation.
Residents in the area could see a white smoke-like beam of mist from the plant following the leak.
Dow Corning, the Barry-based international chemical company has sites in Barry and Manchester and produces silicione. The plant in Barry is the biggest operation for silicone manufacturing outside of the USA.
